HAND GRENADES DISCOVERED IN RESIDENCE
Yesterday at 10:00a.m. The Sault O.P.P. responded to an assault in progress at a residence on Birchgrove Road in Heyden.

A 68-year-old Sault Ste. Marie man went to a residence in Heyden where a verbal dispute turned into a physical assault. The 33-year-old victim was struck several times by an expandable baton. The victim managed to ward off most of the blows before retreating to his residence when the police were called. The victim received minor injuries to his face and arm but sought his own medical treatment. The victim and the accused are known to each other.

Police subsequently located the 68-year-old suspect at his residence where he was taken into custody. Further investigation recovered the baton and a can of pepper spray in a ditch in proximity to the Heyden residence.

A search of the accused's residence turned up numerous firearms and ammunition, some prohibited and stored unsafely.

Also located on a shelf inside the residence were 4 hand grenades. It is believed they were inert, however the Sault Police Services Explosive Disposal Unit was requested to remove the grenades. They are being turned over to the Canadian military for further evaluation.
