A person needed to be rescued yesterday at a popular hiking trail after dropping a personal item down a cliff — then climbing down to try to retrieve it.
As SooToday reported yesterday, the OPP closed the Robertson Cliffs hiking trail on Monday for a rescue operation.
“An individual was hiking the Robertson Lake Cliffs trail when a personal item they were carrying fell approximately 30 feet down a cliff,” the OPP said today in an email to SooToday. “The individual climbed down the cliff to retrieve the item, but became stuck when they were unable to climb back up to the trail.”
Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers were able to secure the person with a safety line until the OPP North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) arrived.
“ERT utilized their low-angle rope rescue training to lower an officer down to the individual,” police say. “They secured the individual and assisted them with climbing back up the rock face.”
The person was not injured. The trail is now open to the public again.
