Police seize many, many cigarettes

WAWA – On Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 at approximately 11:30 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment had occasion to stop a motor vehicle on Highway 17 near the intersection of Highway 101 in the McMurray Township for a traffic violation.

During the stop the officers observed several cartons of unmarked cigarettes.

Further investigation revealed that 53,600 unmarked cigarettes were in the motor vehicle, all were subsequently seized.

As a result Michael Mitchell (51) of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Dawn Holli Wiebe (37) of Winnipeg, Manitoba were charged with the following offences;

  • Adult possess unmarked cigarettes for sale contrary to section 29(1) of the Tobacco Tax Act,
  • Adult possess unmarked cigarettes contrary to section 29 (2) of the Tobacco Tax Act.

The two defendants were released on a summons for court in Wawa in May of 2017.
