CHILD CUSTODY DISPUTES
Sault Ste Marie, Ont.,

Officers from the Sault Ste Marie Detachment handled six calls over the weekend that dealt with child custody disputes.

Most of these calls dealt with estranged spouses and relatives where neither side had a court order for the children

In most of the cases police were able to diffuse that situation until one of the parents is able to get a court order. In two of these situations, the Children?s Aid Society has been notified after some concern for the children or child was expressed by the police or caregiver.

ASSAULT ON SPOUSE ENDS IN WEEKEND JAIL TIME
Echo Bay, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP, assisted by the Anishinabek Police Service, took one man into custody yesterday after he assaulted his spouse several times in one night.

Last night at about 10:00 p.m. police arrived at a home in Echo Bay after receiving information that the woman had been assaulted. Officers had to force their way into the home and after a brief struggle took a 37 year old Echo Bay man into custody.

Some of the allegations are that the man struck the woman with his fists and threatened her. Two of the arresting officers and their families were also threatened by the accused. There were small children in the home at the time of the assaults.

The accused will appear in bail court this afternoon to answer to several assaults and threatening charges. The victim, the children and the accused all share the same last name. In this circumstance, the name of the accused will not be released.
