Goulais River, Ont., The northbound lane of Hwy 17 in Goulais River, north of Sault Ste Marie, has been partially re-opened to traffic.

One lane of the highway is open to traffic in both directions. Traffic is backed up for several kilometers on both sides of the crash. Anyone traveling in that area should be prepared for extensive delays until the backlog of traffic makes its way through the scene.

The highway was closed around the noon hour today after a fatal collision involving a transport and a cyclist. The cyclist died at the scene. Officers with Sault OPP remain at the scene.


Helicopter Spots Vehicle – Injured Man Taken to Hospital

(Township of Hilliard) On Sunday, June 5th, the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call about a distraught man threatening to harm himself.

The man in question was driving his vehicle in the Hilliard/Evantural area just south of Englehart when the OPP were able to make cell phone contact with him.

The OPP helicopter was deployed to search the area for the vehicle and soon spotted a car matching the description enter a large shed.

OPP detachment members from Temiskaming and Englehart and members of the OPP Emergency Response Team responded to the location and found a man, with undetermined injuries, in the shed. The injured man was transported to hospital.

The Province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has been notified and is investigating. Further inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at (416) 622-2342.

NO DETOUR AROUND COLLISION SCENE

Goulais River, Ont., Sault OPP officers at the scene of a fatal collision on Hwy 17 in Goulais advise that there is no detour around the collision scene. Traffic in both directions will be halted until further notice.

The collision scene is on Hwy 17 just north of Karalash Road in Goulais River. Updates on the collision and traffic flow will be sent out as soon as information becomes available.

Fatal Collision Closes HW 17

Goulais River, Ont., Officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment are on the scene of a fatal collision on Hwy 17 in the Goulais River area.

Hwy 17 near the intersection of Mahler Road is closed. Smaller vehicles are being detoured through area side roads. Larger commercial vehicles are being held at the scene.

Break and Enter

Goulais River, Ont., Sault Ste Marie OPP are investigating a break in to a shed on Havilland Shores Drive over the weekend.

Sometime between last Wednesday and this Saturday thieves entered the shed. There was damage to the structure from the forced entry but the owner has been unable to determine what is missing.

Tresspassing Charges

Echo Bay, Ont, Three young offenders found out the hard way just exactly what the phrase “NO TRESSPASSING” means.

On Sunday night at about 10:30 p.m. Sault OPP were called to the Echo Bay Public School after a resident of the area reported a vehicle being driven in the play ground. The operator of the vehicle had to go around a barricade and past a “no trespassing” sign to get into the play ground area. As a result of their actions two 18 year old’s and a 17 year old were all charged with trespassing. The three are from the Echo Bay and Laird Twp area

Speeding leads to Impaired Charge

Sault Ste Marie, Ont., An officer with the Sault OPP detachment once again proves the value of running radar.

At about 3:00 a.m. on Saturday morning the officer with the Sault Detachment was passing through the city on Black Road. He clocked a vehicle travel over the speed limit and pulled the vehicle over. The driver showed typical indicators that he had been drinking. A Breathalyzer test was conducted and showed that the driver was just over twice the legal limit.

Thirty six year old Henry MAZUERA of Sault Ste Marie has been charged with Impaired Driving.

Assistance with Warrant- Lands Many Charges

(Iron Bridge, Ont.) East Algoma O.P.P. were called to assist the Ministry of Natural Resources Conservation Officers with a warrant under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Officers were at the residence to search for a weapon and Ammunition and when the owner objected the O.P.P. became involved.

The owner of the residence is alleged to have swung a shovel at one of the conservation officers and then proceeded to get into a physical confrontation.
The suspect was pepper sprayed and subdued by the officers on the scene.

The execution of the warrant led to the officers discovering suspected drugs and other weapons on the property, other warrants were obtained and several charges resulted.
Charges are as follows:

Possession of a Controlled Drug and Substance over 30 grams.
Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking (Controlled Drug and Substance Act.)
Production of a Controlled Substance. (CDSA)
Careless Storage of a Firearm X 11
Assault with a weapon
Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon
Assault with intent to resist Arrest

Drugs Seized were valued at approx $651,420.

Charged is 42-year-old Francis Rodney Schellekens of 3508 Dayton Road, Iron Bridge, Ont.

Schellekens was held in custody and is to appear in Court in Sault Ste. Marie today (June 6) for a bail hearing.
