Update: Report of Firearm Discharged on Lake Panache Police Contain Island

(Espanola) – Last evening around 9:20 p.m., Espanola OPP officers received a report of gun shots having been fired in the vicinity of three men fishing in Stoney Bay on Lake Panache, Truman Township. The suspect, a lone male boater, was seen driving erratically prior to the shots being fired, docked his boat on an island.

There were no injuries.

An OPP Emergency Response Team along with the OPP Tactical Response Unit, three marine units and the OPP helicopter attended the scene to contain the area.

The suspect was arrested without incident at approximately 10:20 a.m. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.

TWO CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH 17 EAST TRADING POST ARMED ROBBERY

(Desbarats, Ontario) At approximately 9:30 pm on June 20, 2006 two suspects were apprehended in relation to the armed robbery that occurred at the 17 East Trading Post earlier in the evening. The 17 East Trading Post is located at the junction of Highway 17 and Highway 548 (St. Joseph Island Turnoff).

1) Jordan William HURD (21), last known address of Echo Bay, Ontario has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Firearm – Use while committing offence – Section 85(1)(a)
Robbery with Firearm – Section 344(a)
Point Firearm – Section 87
Unauthorized Possession of Weapon – Section 91(2)
Careless Use of Firearm – Section 86(1)
Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose – Section 88

2) Stephen James WARD (20), last known address of Echo Bay, Ontario has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Robbery with Firearm – Section 344(a)
Firearm – use while committing offence – Section 85(1)(a)

The two accused have been remanded to the Algoma Treatment Remand Center to attend a bail hearing on June 22, 2006 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

UPDATE TO WHITE RIVER MOTORCYCLE CRASH

Superior East OPP are investigating the motorcycle collision that took the life of 72 year old, Ronald TAPLIN of Akron Ohio on June 23rd 2006.

Mr. TAPLIN was driving his 1989 Honda Goldwing motorcycle northbound on Highway 17 just south of White River when he left the roadway and went into the northbound ditch. He was transported by ambulance to Lady Dunn Hospital in Wawa where he was pronounced deceased.

There were no other vehicles involved in the collision. The highway was dry and visibility was good at the time.

A Post Mortem will be held on Monday in Sault Ste Marie to determine the cause of death.

FRIDAY NIGHT CRASH FINDS WANTED MAN

Goulais River, Ont.,

A collision on an area side road over the weekend lead OPP to a man wanted by the Sault Ste Marie City Police

On Friday night at about 8:00 p.m. OPP were called to the area of Hwy 552 and Old Post Office Road in Goulais River. When officers arrived at the scene they discovered that the driver had fled the vehicle.

The investigation lead them to interview a person at a local establishment. As a result of the interview forty three year old Michael Sawyer of Sault Ste Marie was arrested on outstanding warrants issued by the Sault Ste Marie City Police Service.

BREAK AND ENTER

Batchewana First Nation, Ont.,

Officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP responded to a break and enter on the Batchewana First Nation over the weekend.

At about 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning an employee of a body shop on the Territory reported to work and found the shop had been illegally entered. It appears that the thieves entered some of the vehicles inside the building. The investigation has been handed over the Batchewana First Nation Police for follow up.

Echo Bay, Ont.,

A forty three year old Sault Ste Marie man was taken to Sault Area Hospital on Saturday night after hitting a tree.

On Saturday night at about 9:00 p.m. the driver of a pick up truck was traveling on Watson’s Road in Echo Bay when he swerved to avoid a bear. The truck left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver of the truck suffered injuries to his face, chest and wrist.

He was taken to Sault Area Hospital and treated for his injuries. Forty seven year old Eric MCDONALD of Sault Ste Marie has been charged with failing to wear a seat belt.

He was the only occupant in the truck.

OLDER CAMPER TRAILER TAKEN FROM DEEP IN THE BUSH

Gaudry Twp, Ont.

Sault Ste Marie OPP are investigating the theft of a camper trailer from Witch Doctor Lake in Gaudry Twp.

The owner of the camper left it at the Lake on 22 May 2006. He returned to the area last week to find the camper gone. It is described as being an older model camper with orange and brown stripes. It is the type of camper that slides into the box of a pick up truck. The owner estimates that camper and contents to be worth about $1500.00 dollars.

Gaudry Twp is located northeast of Searchmont.

TWO CHARGES IN DOMESTIC INVESTIGATION

Heyden, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP have charged a Sault Ste Marie man after a domestic assault from last week.

On 21 June 2006 OPP were called to the snowplow turn around on Hwy 17 in Heyden. The couple met at snowplow turn around and their discussion became heated.

It is alleged that the man grabbed the women’s finger and then a male friend of the victim became involved in a scuffle. On Friday evening the accused attended the Sault Ste Marie OPP Detachment where he was arrested and charged with two counts of assault.

He was held for W.A.S.H court on Saturday and released from custody. He will appear in court on 10 July 2006.
