On Saturday afternoon a motorist picked up a hitchhiker and then was unnerved by what he discovered.

The transient was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

The motorist dropped off his passenger north of Heyden and immediately reported the facts to police.

A short time later the suspect was located near Beaumont Trailer Park and was arrested.

It was discovered that the sawed-offshotgun was loaded.

Jean-Marc Parent, 42, of no fixed address, faces six charges involving the possession and storage of a prohibited weapon.

Identities released in double fatality at Old Woman River

At 12:10 p.m. today, OPP released the names of the Toronto-area twins who died Sunday when their car flipped into the Old Woman River in near the Town of Sultan in the Chapleau area.

The deceased have been identified as Chad and Mark Jessup, both 31.

The cause of death has not been determined, an autopsy is to be conducted today.

Ammonia Leak At Arena

(Bruce Mines, Ontario) On Sunday July 10, 2005 at approximately 9:30 pm the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP were advised by the Bruce Mines Fire Department of an ammonia leak from the ice making plant at the Central Algoma Centennial Arena located on Highway 638 in Bruce Mines, Ontario.

Evacuations were conducted for all homes 1 kilometer downwind of the arena. A stay-in order (close windows and doors) was ordered for residents west and north of the arena up to 2.2 kilometers away. Six residential homes and Light Haven Home (seniors residence) were evacuated. The residents of Light Haven Home were transferred to the Thessalon Hospital, Thessalon’s Algoma Manor and the Thessalon Bible Chapel.

At 2:00 am a Metal Air Technician arrived on scene and the necessary repairs were made by 2:10 am.

There were no injuries as a result of the leak. All residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

Two Break-Ins Reported

(Blind River, Ontario) Over the weekend two separate break and enters were reported to the East Algoma- Blind River OPP.

One break and enter occurred on Victoria Avenue, Blind River where jewellery and money was stolen. The value is estimated at $4100.00.

The second break and enter occurred on Leacock Avenue, Blind River. Hockey cards valued at $2000.00 were stolen.

BREAK AND ENTER AT NORTHERN QUALITY MEATS

(Desbarats, Ontario) On July 8, 2005 at 6:30 am the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP were advised of a break and enter at the Northern Quality Meats in Desbarats, Ontario.

A quantity of money, meat, knives and gloves were stolen.
