MINOR INJURIES IN HEYDEN GARAGE FIRE Heyden, Ont., A garage fire in Heyden on Saturday night sent one person to hospital with minor injuries. At about 8:00 p.m. the Aweres Fire Department was dispatched to a garage fire on Hwy 556 in Heyden.

A garage fire in Heyden on Saturday night sent one person to hospital with minor injuries.

At about 8:00 p.m. the Aweres Fire Department was dispatched to a garage fire on Hwy 556 in Heyden. Investigation has revealed that the owner of the garage had started a fire in the wood stove.

A short time later the garage caught fire. When they noticed the fire, the owner and a woman attempted to salvage some property prior to fire department arrival.

As a result of their actions the women suffered from smoke inhalation. She was taken to Sault Area Hospital were she was treated.

The garage suffered major damage and the owner advises it was not insured.

While volunteer firefighters braved sub zero temperatures to battle a garage fire in Heyden on Saturday night, a thief was plying his trade at the same fire scene.

Members of the Aweres Fire Department had used a chain saw in attempting to extinguish the fire. The firefighters put the chain saw down in the snow and continued to try to save their neighbour's property.

When the fire fighters went to get the chainsaw to put it away, they discovered that someone had stolen it.


WEATHER CAUSES TEMPORARY TRAFFIC CHAOS

Weekend weather kept Sault Ste Marie OPP busy with a multitude of collisions on Saturday afternoon.

At about 1:00 p.m. on Saturday an blast of snow and wind reduced visibility to zero on Hwy 17 in Heyden. In half an hour, Sault Ste Marie OPP responded to eight different collisions in the area between the north city limits and the Mile Hill. Hwy 17 north in that area was closed until weather and traffic conditions allowed for safer travel.

Only one collision involved minor injuries.


SATURDAY NIGHT IMPAIRED
Echo Bay, Ont.,

A Laird Twp man had his drivers licence suspended for 90 days and he will appear in Sault Ste Marie court in late February to answer an impaired driving charge.

On Saturday night at about 9:00 p.m. an OPP officer from the Sault Ste Marie detachment pulled over a car in Echo Bay. The driver was given a roadside breath test and then taken to the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment for a breathalyzer test. As a result of the breathalyzer tests and observations of the driver, charges were laid against the man.

Thirty-seven-year-old Ian Daniel of Laird Twp was charged with one count of Driving While Over .08 Contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.
