On Monday the 14th Feb 05 at 8:41 am while a school bus was picking up students on Cardwell Street in Manitowaning a vehicle drove past the school bus while the flashing red lights and stop arm was out. An alert bus operator from the Carl Brown Bus lines was able to get the description of the driver and vehicle and radio in to the bus dispatcher who reported the incident to the OPP. The driver was located and as a result of the investigation a Manitowaning woman has been charged with failing to stop for a school bus. Constable Dave Millette is the investigating officer.


Manitoulin OPP Kept Busy With Accidents

On Monday the 14th February 05 Manitoulin OPP officers were busy responded to motor vehicle collisions all across the island. Manitoulin Island had experienced snow, freezing rain and then rain, which caused area highways to become extremely slippery with slush. A total of 7 collisions occurred in a span of just a few hours reported Constable Allan Boyd Community Services Officer with the Manitoulin OPP. 5 collisions occurred on Hwy 540 from as far west as Gordon Township to Little Current area. This included vehicles sliding into the ditch and rolling over. On Hwy 6, 2 collisions occurred one involving an emergency ambulance vehicle. Other than being shaken up the drivers escaped serious injury reported Constable Boyd. “Drivers are reminded that in extreme weather conditions such as we experienced that day drivers must adjust their driving standards to those conditions.” “Speed is and will always be a contributing factor in these collisions. I review most motor vehicle collision reports and officers investigating the collisions always state the cause of the collision is speed to fast” Constable Boyd stated.

Drug Arrests

On Wednesday evening the 16th February 2005 at 11:20 pm Constable Dave Rosser was on patrol when he had opportunity to stop and check a vehicle on Townline Road in Sheguiandah Township. Upon checking the vehicle the licence plates were not registered with the vehicle stopped. The three males in the vehicle were questioned and as a result of further investigation and search of the vehicle a large quanitity of alleged marijuana was located. All three men were arrested and remanded in custody pending a bail hearing on Monday the 21st February 05 at Gore Bay Bail Court. Charged with the following offences are as follows

1. Charged with 1 count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance, and 3 counts of Breach of Probation is Jordan CORBIERE age 20 of the M’Chigeeng First Nation.


2. Charged with 1 count of Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance, and 1 count of Possession of stolen Property under $5000 is Leroy Joseph ESQUIMAUX age 21 of Sudbury, Ontario.


3. Charged with 2 counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, 1 count of possession of a controlled substance, 2 counts pf Presentation with intent to gain advantage and 1 count of Possession of stolen property under $5000 is Matthew Paul ESQUIMAUX age 23 of the M’Chigeeng First Nation.

All three men remained in custody since the offence and are scheduled to appear in Gore Bay Bail Court on Monday 21st February 2005 at 1:00pm.

Fatal Snow Vehicle Collision

(Temagami, Ontario)- On the 20th of February, 2005, at 9:33 pm, a motorized snow vehicle was traveling on Lake Temagami and struck a rock elevated above the ice level.

As a result of the collision, the lone driver of the motorized snow vehicle was ejected and succumbed to his injuries.

Dead is Stephen SANDOR age 39, of Port McNicholl, Ontario. Police investigation is continuing.

Test Run On Snowmachine Goes Wrong

Echo Bay, Ont. An Echo Bay man was admitted to Sault and Area Hospital over the weekend after a test run on his snow machine.

On Friday 18 Feb 2005 at about 9:00 p.m. the mans wife called police after she found him severely injured laying in a hole near their home. He had just repaired the snow machine and had taken the machine for a test run in a nearby gravel pit. He drove the machine over an embankment and when he landed he bounced into a two meter hole.

An ambulance was called and he was taken to Sault and Area Hospital. Police believe that he was suffering from several broken ribs, a punctured lung and hypothermia.
Investigation has also indicated that he may have laying in the gravel pit unconscious for a period of time.

Young Offender Charged With Impaired Driving

Goulais River, Ont. A 17 year old young offender has been charged with Impaired Driving after being pulled over by members of the OPP Traffic and Marine Unit.

On Saturday 19 Feb 2005 at about 11:00 p.m. officers with were on patrol of Hwy 552 in Goulais River. They noticed a vehicle fail to yield before pulling onto the highway. The car was pulled over and the driver exhibited indicators that he had been drinking. He was returned to the OPP detachment where Breathalyzer tests confirmed the officer’s suspicions.

A 17 year old young offender from Goulais River has been charged with Driving with a Blood Alcohol Limit Over .08 . He was also issued a $325.00 traffic ticket for driving with no licence. He will appear in court in March.

Impaired Driving

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) February 20, 2005 at approximately 12:44 a.m. police received a call to attend the corner of Ottawa Ave and Spine Road in regards to a vehicle stuck in a snow bank. Police arrived on scene and noted a lone male occupant exiting the vehicle from the driver’s side. Officers approached the car to speak with the driver. A strong odour of alcohol could be detected, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. When asked if he had consumed alcohol, the male replied, “Yes a few”.

Charged with Impaired Driving is Adelore LANDRIAULT (67) of Elliot Lake. LANDRIAULT is scheduled to appear in court on March 8th, 2005.

Window Breaking Spree In Echo Bay

Echo Bay, Ont. Two Echo Bay residents woke up Saturday morning to find their front windows smashed.

Sometime overnight culprits threw a beer bottle through one window and a steel bar through the second window. The occupants of both the home did not realize the damage until they got up in the morning.
