One Drunk In Custody After Hit And Run In Stolen Car

Echo Bay, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP have one man in custody after a hit and run crash on Hwy 17 last night.

At about 9:30 p.m. last night a man, his wife and two young children were traveling east on Hwy 17 in Garden River. He noticed a vehicle coming up behind him at a very high rate of speed.

The second vehicle caught up with the man and his family and was following him so close that he could not see the headlights on the following vehicle. Fearing for the safety of his family he pulled to the right to let the vehicle pass but the following vehicle stayed behind him.

The following vehicle eventually tried to go around the man but struck the back corner of his vehicle. The car did not stop and continued traveling east on Hwy 17 in the wrong lane.

The vehicle pulled to the side of the roadway and the man stopped to confront the driver. The driver sped off traveling east, again in the wrong lane. As the vehicle entered Echo Bay the impaired driver hit a snow bank and the vehicle became stuck in the snow.

The driver left the car and hid in a washroom of a local gas bar. Police arrived and arrested the man. Investigation has determined that the car he was driving had been stolen from Sault Ste Marie.

A twenty four year old Sault Ste Marie man is being held in police holding cells until his appearance in bail court this morning. He is expected to be charged Dangerous Driving, Impaired Driving, Driving While Over .08, Fail to Remain, and Possession of Stolen Property. His identity will be released when court documents are filed later this morning.

Dangerous Ice Conditions

Blind River, Ont.

Ice conditions in and around the docks on Jetty Street in Blind River are dangerous. A local resident reported that two youths had been seen playing around the docks on Jetty St and was concerned for their safety. The incident took place at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday 08 Feb.06.

Parents, do you know where your children are going ?!?

The ice conditions in the area are treacherous. The current from the Blind River and the drop from the dock platform are simply a recipe for a tragedy to happen. The area is somewhat secluded and would be difficult for anyone to observe if someone where to fall in.

Stay away from areas where there is current flowing, you are putting yourself and the rescuers at risk !
