YES—LOVE CAN BE A “PANE”

Searchmont, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to Searchmont Resort last night after a fight between seven people.

At about 10:30 p.m. last night five people were told to leave the bar area by the bar tender. As the group was nearing the exit, two girls started to fight each other. One of the two girls was pushed through a pane of glass in a showcase. Two young men that were accompanying the group tried to break up the fight between the two girls. It is alleged that two other young men, not with the original group, then started to scrap with the first set of men. Although some of the details are still a little sketchy, it appears that the two girls started fighting over the affections of one of the young men in the group.

Security staff at the Resort kicked the entire group out of the building and police were called. Officers located most, but not all, of the combatants leaving the scene on the Searchmont highway. An agreement was made to make immediate restitution to the resort for the broken pane of glass.

None of the involved parties that were located appeared to be suffering any injuries. All of the suspects were from the Upper Peninsula area of Michigan. OPP did charge one of the females with drinking under age.

JOINT R.I.D.E. CHECKS ARE FINDING MORE THAN DRUNK DRIVERS

Last night and into this morning officers checked an estimated 745 vehicles at different locations north of Sault Ste Marie and within the city limits.

While checking one vehicle at these checkpoints, officers with the OPP found one car to have open liquor in the vehicle. Further investigation found that the licence plates on the vehicle were not registered to that vehicle and that the driver did not have a drivers licence. When questioned about the validity of the insurance particulars the driver admitted to not having insurance on the vehicle.

The vehicle was towed from the checkpoint and a sixteen year old Sault Ste Marie youth walked away from the area with a handful of tickets for various offences.
