A Haviland Shores couple is lucky to be alive after a fire totally destroyed their home this morning.

At about 5:30 a.m., the Goulais River Fire and Rescue and the Sault O.P.P. were called to the home on Albert Terrace, just of Haviland Shores Drive in Goulais River.

Just prior to the fire being detected, the family pet dog, "Precious", was acting very strange. These actions woke one of the occupants. The dog was pacing all over the house and was in and out of the bedroom. She was scratching at the radiator and pawing at the occupants.

The woman got out of bed to let the dog out when she noticed flames on the exterior of the house. She woke her husband and the couple escaped with only what they were wearing. The couple was identified as Frank and Maria Trecroci.

The entire home and its contents were totally destroyed. Preliminary investigation of the fire is concentrating on the chimney ands the attic area.


DEATH THREATS RESULT IN CHARGES
Searchmont, Ont.,

Death threats made against a husband and two neighbours has resulted in a Searchmont woman being charged with those offences.

On Saturday night at about 8:00 p.m. OPP officers were called to a home in the Searchmont area after receiving information about the threats. After interviewing several witnesses, police arrested the 47-year-old woman and charged her with two counts of Threatening Death contrary to the Criminal Code.

She was released with conditions and will appear in court on May 5, 2003 to answer to these charges


ASSAULT ON SPOUSE RESULTS IN CRIMINAL CHARGES
Batchawana First Nation, Ont.,

The Batchawana First Nation Police and the Sault Ste Marie OPP took one man into custody early Sunday morning after a woman was grabbed by the throat.

At about 3:00 a.m. police responded to a home on the Territory after the woman called to complain about the assault. The woman advised police that the accused grabbed her by the throat

Officers arrested and charged a 41-year-old Batchawana First Nation man will assault. He will appear in court on April 28 2003. The victim did not require medical attention.


PROPERTY DISPUTES AND NEIGHBOUR DISAGREEMENTS
Goulais River, Ont.,

Sault Ste Marie OPP handled eight property disputes and neighbour disagreements over the weekend.

Officers managed to quell difference of opinion and ownerships over everything from horses to lawn equipment and children.

Officers also were called to several occurrences throughout the entire Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment area, that dealt with arguments and various allegations that were fueled by alcohol consumption.

In all of these cases there were no violations of any criminal laws and it appears that eventually sober minds and cooling off periods did prevail.
