(Kirkland Lake, Ontario) – The Ontario Provincial Police today have charged a 22-year-old man with Second Degree Murder in the death of his infant son.

Kody Gauthier-Kelly, 10 weeks, of Government Road West, Kirkland Lake, was pronounced dead at the Kirkland and District Hospital Saturday July 10, 2004. He had been transported there by ambulance after he was found unresponsive in his crib.

Charged with Second Degree Murder is David Kelly, 22, of Kirkland Lake. He was arrested this morning when he appeared in court. Kelly was remanded in custody to appear in court in Kirkland Lake on May 4, 2005.

Officers from the Kirkland Lake OPP Detachment are continuing their investigation, under the direction of OPP Detective Inspector Tim Millar, Criminal Investigation Branch.

Theft Of Snowmachine & ATV

(Plummer Twp, North of Bruce Mines, Ontario) On April 1, 2005 a theft of a snowmachine and ATV was reported to the East Algoma – Thessalon OPP.

The owner was traveling on Old Soo Road, west of Center Line Road in the Township of Plummer when he received a flat tire on a trailer carrying the two machines. The owner pulled to the side of the road, leaving the trailer and the two machines. The owner returned the next day with a new tire for the trailer to find the two machines stolen.

Stolen vehicles are described as a:

2004 Bombadier 400 Yellow Outlander ATV (All Terrain Vehicle), valued at $8500.00 and a,

2003 Polaris Blue XCX Snowmachine valued at $11,000.00.

Batchawana B&E's

Batchawana, Ont., Police are investigating two break and enters in the Batchawana area over the weekend.

On the morning of Saturday 9 April 2005 a camp owner arrived at his camp on Hwy 17 in Batchawana to discover that a neighbour’s property had been broken into. It appeared that someone entered the seasonal residence and slept in the bed. Nothing else appears to have been removed or touched.

On Sunday 10 April another Batchawana homeowner advised that someone had stolen a chainsaw from a storage facility on his property. Sometime between 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. a Homelite chain saw was removed from his property.

Ongoing R.I.D.E. and Seat Belt Checks Producing Positive Results

Sault Ste Marie, Ont., Officers with the Sault Ste Marie Detachment of the OPP were once again successful in finding several violations while conducting our ongoing R.I.D.E and seat belt spot checks.

Over the weekend officers conducted spot checks in many different areas within the detachment area. Two people were issued 12 hour drivers licence suspensions and two others were given seat belt tickets.

Truck/Bear Collision

Heyden, Ont., You know that spring is really here when the police start reporting collisions involving the motoring public and bears.

So... last night at about 11:00 p.m. Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to Hwy 17 near the intersection of Trout Lake Road in Heyden for a collision involving a bear and a tractor trailer.

The truck was southbound on Hwy 17 when a bear ran into the path of the truck. The bear was killed in the collision and the truck had minor damage to the front end of the vehicle. No one was injured in this collision.
