Winter Driving Tips

SLOW DOWN !

LEAVE A REACTIONARY GAP !

Truck Found On Roof In River

Ranger Lake, Ont., Emergency crews had a few tense moments last night after receiving a report of a truck upside down in a river at Ranger Lake, northeast of Searchmont.

At about 11:00 p.m. last night officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to the Garden River on Ranger Lake Road at Ranger Lake. A passing motorist advised police that a smaller pick up truck was on its roof partially submerged in the Garden River.

Personnel from the Searchmont Fire Department, Sault Ste Marie Ambulance Service and the OPP rushed to the scene. An officer with the OPP waded into the water and attempted to search the vehicle to see if anyone was still in the truck. Officers and rescue personnel were unable to find anyone in or around the truck.

As rescue personnel began to search the area, word eventually reached the scene that the lone occupant was able to get out of the vehicle and walked to a nearby camp for help.

The investigation has indicated that at about 7:00 p.m. last night, the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, the truck went into the Garden River and rolled over onto its roof. The man managed to get out of the truck and walked along Ranger Lake Road until he saw a light on in a camp. He went to the camp for help and was treated by the camp owner for hypothermia. The owner of the camp then drove the man to his home in Searchmont. The driver of the truck did not call police to report the crash.

Sixty two year old George JOHNSON of Searchmont has been charged with Fail to Report an Accident contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. Other than suffering from hypothermia, he was not injured.

A Multi Agency Effort To Promote School Bus Saftey

Sault Ste Marie, Ont., Members of the four police agencies in and around Sault Ste Marie, as well as our community partners, will be out this afternoon to remind motorist to:

“THINK OF US ON THE BUS”

This afternoon between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. members with the Sault Traffic and Road Safety Committee (S.T.A.R.S.) and the Sault Ste Marie Safe Community Partnership will be on Trunk Road, between Fournier Ave and the east city limits to remind motorist to “THINK OF US ON THE BUS”. The “THINK OF US ON THE BUS” program originated with the Ministry of Transportation and is intended to remind all motorists to remember the precious cargo the school buses transport daily—our children.

Members of the Sault Ste Marie City Police, Sault Ste Marie OPP along with Anishinabek Police and the Batchawana Police Service will be on hand to stop motorist and provide everyone with a reminder to pay particular attention to the school buses.

The winter season always provides motorists with constant changes of weather and driving conditions. Blowing and drifting snow can severely restrict everyone’s ability to see the school buses as they stop to pick up and drop off our children. Members of our community groups have banded together to help promote school bus safety through education, awareness and reminders such as “THINK OF US ON THE BUS”.

The Sault Traffic and Road Safety Committee is a coalition of local police partners, the Safe Community Partnership, the Ministry of Transportation, driving school instructors, MADD and DDAC members, as well as the Municipal Health and Safety Association.

For most motorists in Ontario, the only time they review the rules of the road and proper safety procedures is when they originally write the test for their drivers licence.

The objectives of Sault Traffic and Road Safety Committee along with Sault Ste Marie Safe Communities Partnership are to provide education and awareness of safe practices at home, work or play. Today’s highway safety event will serve as a reminder to all drivers, regardless of their experience, to pay closer attention the school buses at all times.

Together we can work to keep Sault Ste Marie and Algoma the safest place to live, learn work and play.
