ACCIDENT CLAIMS 1 LIFE

A two-vehicle motor vehicle accident occurred yesterday on Highway 17, just south of Agawa Rock Road, 70 km South of Wawa.

At approximately 11:20 AM, a van operated by Russel Goodman of Milton, Ontario, was traveling south on Highway 17 when the van failed to negotiate a curve, crossed over into oncoming traffic and struck a northbound pick-up truck. The van then struck a rock cut and caught fire.

The driver of the pick-up, Bernie Chartrand, 65 years old of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van, Russel Goodman, age 49, of Milton, Ontario, was brought to Lady Dunn General Hospital in Wawa and later transferred to Sault Ste Marie by air ambulance.

The passenger of the van, Anthony Ishmael, 57 years old, of Etobicoke, Ontario, was flown to Sunnybrook Hospital in critical condition.

Highway 17 was closed for approximately 5 hours while OPP conducted the investigation.
