Heyden, Ont., An attempt by one neighbour in Heyden to resolve a dispute over snow shoveling has resulted in charges against a second neighbour.

On Wednesday night police were called to Heyden Lake Road, in Heyden, after receiving a complaint of assault. The investigation indicated that late in the afternoon the accused return to his home and started to shovel snow from his driveway onto the neighbours driveway.

It is alleged that the victim came out and tried to find some rational or reason for the action of the accused. After a brief discussion between the two, the accused then threw several shovels of snow and ice at the victim. The accused then stuck the victim on the back and shoulders with the shovel. A scuffle between the two ensued and they returned to their respective homes.

As a result of this investigation sixty six (66) year old Robert PALAHNUK, of 53D Heyden Lake Road was arrested last night. He has been charged with Assault With a Weapon and two counts of Breach of Probation. He is appearing in Bail Court this morning.

Thief Steals Cash And Dumps Purse

(Elliot Lake, Ont.) Around 2:30 p.m. a lady had her purse stolen while making deliveries at an Apartment complex at 1 Washington Cr. in Elliot Lake. The victim had left her purse in a cart in the hallway for only a couple of minutes when it was taken. No witnesses saw the theft.

At around 5 p.m. the victim recovered her purse from a mailbox at the Hillside Shop and Save on Hillside Drive North. She was missing all her money, which was to be used to pay her rent.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen any of the above activities or know of a suspect to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Tractor Trailer Demolished In Crash

Mamainse Harbour, Ont.,

A tractor trailer was demolished and the driver not injured after the rig went into the ditch and struck a rock cut last night.

Just after midnight last night, officers with the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment and the Batchawana Fire and Rescue were called to Hwy 17 about 2 kms north of Mamainse Harbour. The investigation is indicating that the transport was north bound on Hwy 17. The driver attempted to avoid a small animal and lost control of the truck. The truck spun around and ended up facing south in the northbound ditch.

The entire front axle of the truck was ripped from the unit. An environmental recovery company was called in to remove the diesel fuel from the fuel tanks of the truck. There was a minor fuel leak in the area. Wreckage from the crash was scattered across the highway.

Officers and fire personnel spent the night assisting in the removal of the wreckage. Most of the transport is now removed and there are no traffic restrictions in the area. The truck was not carrying any dangerous or hazardous goods.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the crash. The investigation is still ongoing and no decision on any charges has been made.

Assault On Pregnant Woman

The Batchewana First Nation Police and the Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to a Frontenac Street address yesterday afternoon after a pregnant woman was assaulted by her spouse.

At about 3:30 p.m. officers were called to an apartment complex on Frontenac Street after a disturbance in the hallway. Officers attended the apartment and found an intoxicated man in the common area. Investigation has indicated that an argument took place between the man and his spouse and he pushed her. The victim indicated that she is seven months pregnant.

A thirty three year old Batchewana First Nation man was taken into custody and charged with assault. He will appear in bail court this morning. The victim indicated that she did not require medical attention.

Stolen Snow Machine

Sault Ste Marie OPP were called to a Heyden business after the owner of a snow machine discovered that the machine was stolen.

The owner of the machine left his 1998 Polaris Indy at the business with a “for sale” sign on the machine. Sometime between 23 and 27 February the business owner saw the machine was gone and thought that the owner made the sale. It turns out that thieves took the machine. If you have seen anyone riding or stripping the parts off a 1998 Polaris Indy the Police, Crime Stoppers and the owner of the machine would like to get a call from you with that information.

Drunk Driver Cuts Off Police Car

A Sault Ste Marie man was charged with Impaired Driving and has had his licence suspended for the next 90 days after being caught driving after he had been drinking.

Last night at about 8:00 p.m. an officer with the Sault Ste Marie detachment was traveling north on Great Northern Road when a vehicle pulled out of a business into the path of the police car. The officer had to take evasive action to avoid a crash.

The vehicle was pulled over and the officer quickly determined that the driver had been drinking. The man was returned to the police station were a Breathalyzer test confirmed the officers observation

Forty seven year old Harold JARRETT, of 333 Wilson Street in Sault Ste Marie has been charged with Impaired Driving and Driving While Over the Legal Limit. He will appear in court on April 10 2006.
