SNOWMOBILE TIPS FROM SR. CONSTABLE BILL MACKAN
Goulais River,

Members of the OPP Northeast Region Traffic and Marine unit have been making steady patrols of the areas snow machine trails.

Just one of their patrol functions is to run radar at selected areas along the trail system in attempts to keep the trails safe for all users. So far this year, since the trails opened, some of the more notable violations of interest were at least three speeders worth mentioning.

While running radar on the area trails OPP officers have charged people that have been clocked on the radar traveling at 120, 110 and 103 kms per hour. The speed limit on a snow machine trail is 50 Km/h.

When you are caught speeding on a highway the fines are prorated according to the speed you are travelling. Under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act there is one set fine of $110.00 regardless of the speed you are travelling.

Excessive speed is one of the three major contributing factors in all snow machine fatalities in Ontario
