Traffic Mishap will Close Road

(Shedden Twp, Ont.(Spanish)) Just after midnight on Friday 07 Apr.06 a tractor and semi trailer carrying coiled steel drove onto the soft should of the road and was unable to maintain control causing the truck to slump onto its side and become stuck.
The incident occurred just east of the Town of Spanish in the 70 km/h zone.
No one was injured and no damage was sustained in the mishap. The load remained secure.

Lane Restriction Ended

Hwy 17 was reduced to one lane at times, from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The lane restriction was to allow for the vehicle to be up-righted.

The driver, 41-year-old Glenn RILEY was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for: failing to maintain his log book

CRASH VICTIM AIRLIFTED TO TORONTO HOSPITAL

Laird Twp, Ont., The victim from yesterday’s high speed crash on Hwy 17 in Laird Township has been flown to a Toronto hospital for further treatment.

Late yesterday afternoon a car and a pick up truck were traveling on Hwy 17 in Laird Twp at speeds in excessive of 140 km/h. The two vehicles made contact; the pick up truck left the highway and rolled over several times.

The impact was so severe that the entire cab of the pick up truck became dislodged from the frame and came to rest sideways on the engine.

Twenty five year old George CORBIERE of Hiawatha Drive in Garden River was taken to Sault and Area Hospital last night in serious condition. Early this morning he was airlifted to a hospital in Toronto.

A seventeen year old Sault Ste Marie girl faces two charges under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario. This investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.

High Speed Crash Sends One To Hospital

A two vehicle crash yesterday afternoon in Laird Twp sent a twenty five year old man to hospital with serious injuries.

At about 5:15 yesterday a car and a pick up truck were traveling east on the two lane section of Hwy 17 near Town Line Road. The police investigation is indicating that the two vehicles were traveling side by side at about 140 km/h.

The pick up truck pulled in the same lane as the car and the two vehicles contacted each other. The pick up truck went into the ditch and rolled over several times. The driver of the pick up, a 25 year old man, was transported to Sault and Area Hospital by ambulance with what is believed to be serious injuries.

The two occupants of the car were not injured. The driver of the car, a 17 year old female from Sault Ste Marie has been charged with Careless Driving and Being a Class G1 Driver, Not Accompanied by a Qualified Driver.

The pick up truck was totally destroyed and had to be towed from the scene. This collision is still under investigation and further charges are pending.

Fire Destroys Heyden Garage

A fire yesterday afternoon completely destroyed a Heyden garage and the contents of the building.

At about 3:30 p.m yesterday police and fire personnel were called to Birchgrove Road in Heyden after the homeowners discovered their garage on fire. Fire fighters from the Aweres Twp and Goulais River Fire and Rescue responded to the fire but the building was fully engulfed when emergency officials arrived.

Fire officials do not suspect any foul play and there is no police investigation into the fire. The building measured about 20x 40 feet.

Domestic Dispute

A Goulais River man was arrested this morning after assaulting his wife in their home.

At about 1:00 a.m. this morning police were called to the home after the victim called for assistance.

Investigation has revealed that the woman was grabbed by the neck and assaulted. She did not require immediate medical assistance. A fifty five year old Goulais River man was taken into police custody at the scene. He has been charged with assault and will appear in court on May 3, 2006.

Unprovoked Assault

(Blind River, Ont.) At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday 06 Apr.06 a man assaulted another in a misunderstanding.

A misunderstanding over alleged words uttered to a female person caused a man to walk up to the victim and head but him in the face. The victim sustained bruising and swelling to the area. The incident took place on the street in front of witnesses.

The suspect was arrested just before 6:00 p.m. the same day and was released on his own recognizance to attend court in Blind River on 01 June 2006.

Charged with Assault is 34-year-old Shane LAMBERT of Hwy 17 Iron Bridge, Ontario.

The vehicle will be up-righted today at approximately 10:00 a.m. and this may cause the Hwy to be closed for approximately 1 hour.
