Fatal crash on Highway 17 east of Sault was hit-and-run, OPP say

A collision east of Sault Ste. Marie on Friday night that killed a pedestrian was a hit and run, police say.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification, the OPP said in a news release.

Police are looking for possible dash cam footage from anyone who may have been traveling on Highway 17 near Green Bay Road, west Bruce Mines, at the time of the crash.

The East Algoma OPP says that on Jan. 20, shortly after 9 p.m., officers responded to a collision in which a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 17.

The collision took place near Green Bay Road and Boundary Road in Plummer Additional Township, between Desbarats and Bruce Mines.

The incident closed the highway in both directions overnight Friday and into Saturday afternoon.

The East Algoma OPP Crime Unit with assistance from the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team and Sault Ste. Marie OPP Forensic Identification Services is continuing the investigation.

The probe is under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
