Echo Bay man dead after snowmobile goes through ice

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and the Sault fire service airboat helped retrieve the man from the water

OPP respond to snowmobile that went through the ice 

JOHNSON TOWNSHIP - On Friday March 31, 2017, shortly after 2:00 p.m. the East Algoma Thessalon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motorized snow vehicle (MSV) that went through the ice on Gordon Lake.

Police learned three men on two snowmobiles went ice fishing on Gordon Lake. The lead snowmobile with the lone driver went through the ice near their destination of Flat Island.

The male was retrieved from the water with the assistance of the United States Coast Guard helicopter and Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department's airboat. Shortly after 4 p.m. he was then transported to hospital via Thessalon Algoma District Paramedic Services. 

Peter Vaughn, 53 years of age, from Echo Bay, Ontario, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The OPP would like to remind snowmobile enthusiasts of their responsibilities and due diligence when venturing out.
