East Algoma OPP officer accused of impaired driving in Tiny Township

The Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have charged an off-duty East Algoma OPP officer with impaired driving.

Police say they responded to a call of a possible impaired driver at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday in Tiny Township.

In a press release issued this evening, officers say they located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

As a result of the investigation, the driver was placed under arrest for operation of a motor vehicle while impaired and transported to an OPP Detachment where further breath tests were conducted.

As a result, Matthew Melchiorre, 26, of Elliot Lake, has been charged with operation while impaired and operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration over 80 mg.

OPP say the accused is with the East Algoma OPP as a provincial constable in his first year of service.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on Feb. 18, 2021 to answer to the charges.
