Domestic disturbance call at Wakomata Lake leads to assault charge

A Laird Township resident has been charged with assault after officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on Wakomata Lake on Friday afternoon.

A news release issued today by the the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) states that the couple had been camping in the area when the incident occurred.

Full text of the OPP release follows:

CASSON TOWNSHIP - On June 12, 2021 shortly after 3 p.m., members from the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic disturbance that had occurred the evening of June 11, 2021 at a seasonal residence on Wakomata Lake (off of Highway 129 north of Thessalon) in Casson Township.

Investigation determined a couple had gone camping and an argument ensued that escalated to one of the parties [allegedly] being physically assaulted.

As a result, a 57-year-old from Laird Township was arrested at approximately 4 p.m. on June 12, 2021 and charged with:
    •    Assault - spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on July 4, 2021.
