Highway 17 East re-opened following fatal collision

TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE - Shortly after 8 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two vehicle motor vehicle collision involving a school bus and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) on Highway 17 near the village of Spragge within the Township of the North Shore.

At 12:51 p.m., Highway 17 re-opened to two lanes.

The investigation is continuing.

11:15 a.m. update

TOWNSHIP OF THE NORTH SHORE - Shortly after 8 a.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two vehicle motor vehicle collision involving a school bus and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) on Highway 17 near the village of Spragge within the Township of the North Shore.

The driver of the SUV, Marc Robitaille, 62 years of age from Spragge, Ont., was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Seven secondary school students from the bus were transported to local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At 9:54 a.m., Highway 17 re-opened to one lane.

The investigation is continuing.

SPRAGGE - Members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police have responded to a two vehicle motor vehicle collision involving a school bus and a sports utility vehicle on Highway 17 near the village of Spragge within the Township of the North Shore.

Both vehicles were travelling eastbound on Highway 17 where the SUV rear ended the school bus. Students on board the school bus have sustained minor injuries and the male driver of the SUV has been transported to local hospital.

Highway 17 remains closed in both directions at this time and the investigation is continuing.

OPP will advise the public as to when Highway 17 will reopen. There are no detours in the area.
