MONTREAL — Quebec now has 5,195 deaths linked to COVID-19 after adding another 47 deaths to its provincially tally today.

The province also reported 158 new cases, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 53,824.

Of the 47 COVID-19 deaths reported today, 16 are new deaths while 31 occurred before June 5.

The province is also reporting a drop of 52 people in hospital to 788 while the number in intensive care is down five to 102.

The province announced Quebecers hoping to drive to Iles-de-la-Madeleine this summer will be permitted to travel through New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island to take the ferry as of June 26 after reaching deals with both provinces.

There had been concerns about driving to the island due to the COVID-19 situation, but the Quebec government announced Saturday that Quebec travellers will need to get a document permitting the trip and they won't be able to cross the provincial borders without it.

Motorists will need to have a round trip ferry ticket and proof of accommodation.

They will be allowed to stop in New Brunswick to refuel, eat or sleep for one night while in Prince Edward Island, Quebec tourists can stop for gas, but must travel directly to the Souris ferry terminal from the Confederation Bridge.
