WHITBY, Ont. — Police have charged a 43-year-old man with assault after they allege he started a fight with a hockey player at an under-16 game in Whitby, Ont.

Durham regional police say the alleged altercation happened on Monday night, as one of the players left the ice.

They say there had been a fight between two players on the ice, and as one of them was trying to get off the rink, the man allegedly grabbed and shoved the teen.

Police say bystanders intervened, and the fight spilled out into the parking lot of the Iroquois Park Sports Complex.

Police say the accused is charged with assault and causing a disturbance by fighting.
