(August 19, 2000- October 21, 2020) – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matthew Joseph Wheten, tragically, as a result of a motor vehicle accident on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.

Beloved son of Isabelle and Michael Wheten and deeply loved by his brothers Jeremy (Sarah), Cody (Jessie) and Aaron (Darienne).  Beloved grandson of Eleanor and the late Kent Wheten and Georgina and the late Jose Arruda.   Cherished nephew of Pamela (Walter) Cayen of Mississauga, ON, Beverley Wheten of Victoria, BC, Carlos (Trish) Arruda and Sylvia Arruda.  Matthew was adored by his cousins Alan and Taylor Cayen, Jordan (Maddy), Ryan, Cole and Ethan Arruda.

No words can describe the pain we feel at losing our beautiful son.  We are completely devastated, and our hearts are shattered into a million pieces.  Matthew had so many friends and loved spending time with all of them.  He will continue to be loved by so many, especially his girlfriend, Shannon Liguori.  Matt was the life of the party, demonstrating his love through his humour and provided countless hours of laughter.

We are so proud and privileged to be Matt’s parents and to have watched the amazing man he had become and was still moulding into.  He was loving, kind and sensitive and would wear his heart on his sleeve around those he loved.  He was in his glory during family gatherings, especially Christmas.  There was no end to the hours of loud conversations and laughter with his brothers and cousins.  He loved them all so much.

Matthew will always be remembered for his love of life, his love of family and his love of hockey and football.

Family and friends may visit at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton and Kiteley Chapel (492  Wellington St. E.) by appointment only on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 from 2-4 pm or 6-9pm.  Please call 705-759-2522 to book an appointed time as capacity is limited.  Face masks required. A private funeral service will be held.  Friends are invited to view the service online on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 11:00am, Rev. Alex Saurianthadathil and Rev. Mr. Len Monico officiating. The service can be viewed anytime up to 90 days.  Go to www.funeraweb.tv and select Matthew’s name to view the service.  Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  In keeping with Matthew’s wish to give every child an opportunity to play football, memorial contributions by cheque or online to Sault Amateur Football Association would be appreciated.  Please visit Arthur Funeral Home website obituaries to leave memories and condolences as a keepsake for the family.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Officers Burrows, Maione and Lillington, the paramedics who attended the scene, the first responders who were the last to talk to Matthew and all the Emergency Room staff including the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists, the hospital lab staff, especially Transfusion Services, the incredible staff of the Intensive Care Unit including Drs. Khot, Laviolette and Ghosh, Kathleen O’Brien, Stacey, Brianna, Dave, Michelle, Natalie and especially Robin for your incredible strength, compassion and support to the family during this very difficult time.  (MANY THANKS TO OUR EXTENDED FAMILY AND FRIENDS FOR YOUR LOVE, SUPPORT, AND PRAYERS).  We would also like to thank our extended football and hockey families and the community of Sault Ste. Marie for the overwhelming support, concern and love shown to us during such a difficult time.  Your kind words and your generosity will never be forgotten.
We take great comfort in knowing that Matthew will be reunited with his beloved grandfathers, vavo Joe and poppo Kent and will rest in the loving arms of God.

“What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”  Rest in peace my beautiful boy. Forever in our hearts until we meet again.  Xoxo
In the spirit of Matthew’s personality and his love of Hockey and Football we ask that the visitation be casual. Please wear your favorite team's jersey as that is what Matt is leaving us in.
