Passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 11, 2024 with family by his side at the age of 87.
Beloved husband of Nelly for 64 years. Cherished father of Gerry (Lori), Sylvia Funk (Greg), Marian Brooks (Randy), Patty (Dan Fisher), Pete, and Tommy (Wendy-Jo). Papa of Brandie (Jordan), Matthew, Jamie (Heather), Jesse (Kimberly), Kristen (Shaun), Kimberly (Tyler), Corey (Chelsea), Jon (Amelia), Josh (Amber), Tristan (Tiia), Camryn, and Rhiannon. Opa to Layla, Landon, Austin, Avery, Aria, Emalynn, Norah, MacKenzie, and Jack. Predeceased by his parents George and Francisca Van Hoof. Oldest of 15 children. Peter will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Peter immigrated with his family from Holland in 1955 and later became a Canadian Citizen. He was a carpenter by trade and a Superintendent of Construction, which brought him to numerous cities across several provinces. He was a scuba instructor, had a competitive nature, as well as a love of soccer, golf, horseshoes, pool, cribbage, hunting and fishing. He was a proud member of the Kinsmen Club for many years.
Peter and his wife owned and operated Big Basswood Lake Camp & Trailer Park for over 30 years and made many lasting friendships with those on the lake.
The family would like to thank Dr. Rassouli and the nurses from the Cancer Clinic at the Sault Area Hospital. Special thank you to Sue and Sean from Bayshore Home Health for all of their care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at the Water Tower Inn (Centre Hall / East Hall) from 4 – 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions payable by cheque or online to Tracy's Dream would be appreciated by the family.
