(Johnny, coach, ump, Mr. T) - November 1, 1929 - October 2, 2021

John passed away peacefully at Algoma Residential Community Hospice on Saturday, October 2, 2021 surrounded by the love of his family at the young age of 91.

Beloved and devoted husband of Shirley (nee Eakett) for 65 years. Proud father and best friend of Kim (Judy), Jamie (Diane Zauner), Tina Desanti (Bob) and Terri Pritchard (Jamie Fantham). Adored by his grandchildren Collin (Meghan), Kaitlin (Rob), Devan (Jeff), Ryan (Danielle), Shane (Alicia), Tara            (Brandon), Sam, and A.J. (Kayla). Great grandpa of Maya, Colton, Robert and Scarlett.  Uncle John to many nieces and nephews, and a respected cousin to many.  Survived by his brother Ken (Helen) and his sisters Elane Turner and Brenda Frayn (Chuck).  Predeceased by his parents John (Jack) Alfred Sr. and Emily (nee Wyatt), and his siblings Marguerite Hambly (late Nyle), Chuck (late Evedine) and Ann Wilson (Delmar).

John learned resilience and perseverance at the young age of 21 when he lost his right hand in an industrial accident at Algoma Steel. John never considered it a disability but carried on with his life calling square dances, fastball catcher, hockey goalie, umpiring fastball, coaching hockey and ball, and his love of horse racing. He returned to Algoma Steel and became a very respected foreman.  No matter what he was involved in, he was passionate and often animated.  His hand and stump would be waving and he could be heard by all.

John was a family man, husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa (big-grandpa).  It is hard to believe he had time to raise a family with his commitments outside the home.  But no matter what his kids, or grandkids were involved in he always made time to show up and be involved. He spent many hours at sporting events, music events, at the bottom of ski hills, dance recitals, and gym meets.  Sometimes as coach, sometimes as mentor, and always a supporter. He was often a second father and grandfather to many others in the community.

No matter where John went everyone knew him and fondly called him Johnny.

The family would like to thank Dr. Chris Bruni and Sharon for taking such excellent care of John over the years. A huge thank you to all the staff at SAH 3C especially Dr. Kargbo, Dr. Dawson, Dr. Booth and Jill. Although his stay at ARCH was short, the family will be forever grateful for the kindness and respect shown to us.

A private family celebration and cremation has taken place.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made by cheque or online to SAH Foundation, ARCH or Central United Church.  A celebration of John’s beautiful life will take place at a later date.

Lace up Johnny, cause in heaven you get to play goalie with two hands.  Our memories of you will live on in our hearts forever.

Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. - 705-759-2522). Please visit www.arthurfuneralhome.com to leave a message of condolence as a keepsake for the family.
