Our hearts are broken to announce Doug’s passing on October 31, 2022, at the age of 74.  Doug’s journey is over and he is finally pain free.  Doug passed his way; at home, with his family by his side.

Doug was lucky to have had two loves. His first marriage was to the late Linda (nee Maki) and his second marriage is to “his love muffin” Nadine (nee Mills).

Loving father of Jason, Jamie (Shannon), Jen Ratelle (Dave) and chosen Dad of Deena Eddy (Eric). Proudest grandpa of Danielle, Lindsey, Chloe, Alicia, Caleb, Jamie and Arken.

Son of the late Jacob and Mickie Shewfelt.  Doug will be fondly remembered by his sisters Brenda Pettenuzzo (late Reno), Connie Vallee (Don), the late Patricia Gail as well as many nieces and nephews.  Brother-in-law to Gary Maki, Wendy Dumais (Ray), Pam Ayers (late Roy) and Tammy Comegna (Art).

Doug retired from Algoma Steel in 2003 and loved spending time with his family and all of the grandkids.  He always looked forward to golfing with “the hole in the wall gang” and our couples golf getaways.  For decades, Doug enjoyed playing cards with his old buddies Don, Dave, Larry and Graham in Graham’s garage. Doug had many happy and funny stories to share about camping and fishing with Daddy Huck and his buddies. It was always an experience driving with Doug. Our vocabulary was expanded with his colourful language and hand signals!

Every single day Doug would sing to Nadine “Have I told you lately that I love you, have I told you how much I care”.

A special thank you goes to Doug’s life-long friend, two-time best man, and chosen Brother, Moe Belsito (Marcella) for all of your love and friendship.

Thank you to Doug’s Renal family. You have gone above and beyond over the last four years. Thank you for your love and compassion in supporting Doug’s final wishes.

To Dr. David Berry and Dr. Mir Shafiee; Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your friendship and care for Doug gave us peace.

We are very grateful for all of Doug’s medical care, especially Dr. Cziffer, Dr. K. Woolner, Dr. Curran, Dr. Wilson, Dr. N. Apostle and the nurses from ParaMed and Bayshore.

As per Doug’s wishes, a private family celebration of his life will take place.
