On Monday, August 3, 2020, after a long and courageous battle, Heaven welcomed a most beautiful angel. Joan, an accomplished writer, teacher, social worker and lover of music was the treasured wife and partner to the late Dr. Geoffrey Secord; cherished and beloved mother to Sara Trotter, Susan Harnden (Eric), the late Hilary McKinley, Christopher Appleton (Kelly Anne); loving sister to Donald Mitchell (Wendy); loving grandmother to E.J. Harnden (Rachelle), Ryan Harnden (Jasmine), Meghan Majic (Adam), Kaitlyn Trotter, Bryn Gelinas (Keith), Erin Appleton, Dane Appleton (Emily), the late Tara McKinley, Adam McKinley, Taylor McKinley, Mike Lowe, Liam Lowe; fondly remembered by her many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joan is now reunited with her beloved Geoff and other dearly loved members of her
family who have preceded her.

Joan’s loving nature was extremely infectious not only to family but also others who had the great fortune to make her acquaintance. Her keen sense of humour and warmth was evident  until her passing and helped to sustain each of her family members. As a mother, Joan was always available to provide solace during difficult times but also shared enthusiastically in the successes and accomplishments of her children. We, her children, will forever be inspired and touched by her compassion, strength and guidance.

Our family wishes to extend a gracious and emphatic thank you to the PSWs and nurses on Apple 1 and Birch 1 at the Davey Home for their ongoing care and concern for our mother especially during this most difficult time. We are certain that their excellent care and attention resulted in the opportunity for extended time with our mother and we are extremely grateful. A private family service and celebration of life will take place.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Alzheimer's Society or the F.J. Davey Home Foundation would be most appreciated.  Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E 705-759-2522). Please visit Arthur Funeral Home website obituaries to leave memories and condolences as a keepsake for the family.
