SAVAGE, Lillian Alma (Curly)

Posted

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother in her 100th year at the Sault Area Hospital, General Site on Thursday, April 10, 2008. Lillian was born on Valentine’s Day in 1909 in Wiarton, Ontario. Daughter of the late Alex and Esther McBride. Predeceased by her husband William Savage in 1966 and her only sibling Gordon McBride and his wife Alma McBride. Exemplary mother and best friend of her only child, a daughter, Patricia Chorney. Grandmother of three grandsons Wayne Chorney (Pam), Scott Chorney (Karen) and Craig Chorney (Wanda). Great grandmother of Andrew, Mikaela, Katryna, Annina, Joel and Evan. Special aunt of Ann Richardson (John) of Burlington, Ontario. Mrs. Savage, affectionately later known as Gran Savage, was employed in Southern Ontario as a registered nurse until she followed her soon to be husband, Bill, to Timmins, Ontario. Shortly thereafter she became a full time domestic engineer and mother. She was widowed early in her long life and she followed the Chorney family to Sault Ste. Marie in 1970 where she made an apartment her same home until her passing this past week. Our mother and grandmother was a model of modesty and humility. She always gave to all of us far more than she ever expected to receive. Birthdays, graduations, weddings, Christmas and Easter were her specialties always celebrating with thoughtful cards and gifts. She epitomized motherhood with all of its love, protectiveness and nurture until death. As was her habit for the past 40 years she would insist that her daughter, Pat, call her in the evening to assure her that she was home and safe. From her hospital bed she insisted that Pat call the hospital to confirm that she had arrived safely home. In her final hours, she continued to be concerned about our needs not thinking of her own. She was the most selfless and decent human being anyone could meet. Her courage, strength and independence until the end was a direct reflection of the depth of her internal fortitude. We will miss her immensely, particularly on Valentine’s Day. Special thanks to family physician Dr. David Fera and Dr. Berg. Also, thank you to the nursing staff on the sixth floor at the General Hospital site for their compassion in her final days. Lastly, thank you to Lena Orchard and Precy Hernando from ComCare Health Services and Kathy Palombi. Mrs. Savage looked so forward to their home visits. Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Monday, April 14, 2008 from7-9 pm. Funeral service to be celebrated in the chapel on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 11 am. Mr. John Maccarone officiating. Interment Timmins Memorial Cemetery. Donations to the New SAH Fund would be appreciated. www.mem.com “He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed those weary eyelids, and whispered ‘peace be thine’.” We love you Gran.
