It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Walter at the Sault Area Hospital in the arms of his beautiful and devoted wife, surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

Married for almost sixty years to the love of his life Marija. Survived by his loving daughters Ann (Shawn Richards) and Vera (Ray Neering) and grandchildren Luka and Danica Neering.

Walter was born in Sault Ste. Marie in 1932 to Ante and Ane Sarich. Predeceased by brother John.

He never forgot his west end roots and was a masterful storyteller and advocate for working class people. He devoted much of his life to environmental and human rights causes. A millwright and proud union man, he was also a teacher and lifelong student of history. He lived life on his own terms and bravely fought a 20 year battle with heart disease.

He is also survived by many relatives in Croatia, Canada, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.

We would like to thank numerous health professionals including Drs. Jarrett, Gupta and Ianni; nurses Sue and Mike, paramedics and many friends over the years for their kindness and support.

A private family visitation and service will take place with Father Hamish Currie officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
