SANDVIK, Katherine 'Katie' (nee Cuncic)

Sandvik

 November 15, 1922 – February 6, 2022

For almost a century, Katie lived on Wallace Terrace and was proud of her humble home. Anyone who walked or drove by regularly, would see her sitting on her steps waving at the neighbours.

Katie was born to Croatian parents (late Steve and late Mary Cuncic) who instilled in her the importance of family. She grew up with her siblings: late Mary Farkas (late Joseph), late Barbara Dasovich (late Tom), late Frank and late Steve/nickname Peppy Cuncic.

Katie grew up during the Great Depression and worked at Algoma Steel during WWII. After the war, she worked in the laundry department at the General Hospital. In 1956, Katie met and married our father, Gunnar Sr. (1982). The story is that our shy father, who lived across the street, had his eye on Katie. Our parents settled in to married life and raised us, their three children: Cindy Lance (Dan), Gunnar (Lisa), and Susan Bye (Philip). As proud as she was of her children, her grandchildren Matthew (Kristen Greco), Daniel, Samantha, and Hope (Cam Elsby) were really the apple of her eye. Katie enjoyed her grandchildren to the fullest and they have many wonderful memories. We always say her grandchildren kept her young!

Katie was the sister-in-law to: late Einar (Fern), late Eric (Joyce), late Ruth Dupuis (late Joe), late Jimmy (late Marg), and late Carl. She will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

We feel blessed that we had Katie with us for as long as we did and that she passed away peacefully and with dignity at 99 years of age. We are very grateful to our friends, neighbours, and family members who asked about her over the years and sent well wishes.  We are very thankful to the many people who supported Katie at the Group Health Centre, LHIN and Sault Area Hospital. We are especially grateful for the kindness and care shown to Katie by the Driftwood 2 staff at the FJ Davey Home especially with the demanding COVID protocols.

At Katie’s request, a private family mass has been arranged. Donations in Katie’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or St. Gregory’s Church (payable online or by cheque), which were both special to Katie.
