1927-2011 - On Monday, August 8, 2011, Bob passed away peacefully at the Davey Home in Sault Ste. Marie. Only months earlier, Bob lost his loving wife and partner of sixty years, Judith Anne (nee Claydon). He leaves behind his children Rob and Lesa Robertson, Heather Robertson and Jack Selody, and Phyllis Robertson; grandchildren Michael and Jes Robertson, Jonathan Robertson and Amanda Heaton, Karen Selody, Emily Barber and Robby Barber; and his great-granddaughter, Avery Robertson. Bob was born in Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Engineering. He and his family lived in several Canadian cities before making their home in Sault Ste. Marie, where Bob became Senior Vice President in the Commercial Department at Algoma Steel. Bob was an unwavering optimist, which he attributed to having found a soul mate who believed in him and whose grace and inner beauty complemented his “can do” attitude. His high professional standards and lasting friendships in the steel industry were borne out by the many retirement parties held throughout North America in his honour. Even while facing serious health issues of his own, he volunteered his time to raise funds for the Sault Area Hospital Foundation. Bob was a good friend and mentor and many sought his advice about work and life. An avid golfer, he passed his enthusiasm for the game to the next generations. His friendly smile and playful magic tricks made “Uncle Bob” a favourite of family and neighbourhood children alike, especially the Watsons and the Hamiltons. His grandchildren remember sharing stories with him and learning from him how to swim and cast a fishing rod. Many who had the pleasure to sit at his Christmas table recall the laughter when Bob traditionally produced his collection of toy musical instruments and led the carols. Bob held a special place in his heart for his younger sister Kay Condra and brother Stan Robertson, and his dear departed mother Violet and brothers John and Donald. He was delighted to have the chance to meet Avery, the newest Robertson to join the clan. In his memoirs, Bob told of his path through life and his travels around the world – always “onward and upward.” Should friends wish, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation.
