With broken hearts, the family of Kevin Reid wishes to announce our unimaginable loss in his passing on Thursday, May 30th 2019. He was 56 years young and fought hard to stay as he had so many dreams and every reason to live. He was surrounded by the love of so many family and friends who were with him both physically and in spirit. He was definitely not alone and left this world knowing full well the impact he had on us all.
Kevin was the son of John and Jean Reid (deceased and lovingly referred to by Kevin as Johnn-io and Jean-A). He was the youngest of five surviving brothers Jimmy (Mary), Randy (Linda), Terry (Elaine), Danny (Beverley) and Frank (Karen) all whom miss him dearly. Kevin married into the Cove family and is lovingly remembered by Glenn Cove (Patricia) and their children Barb, Brian (Kandy), Kathy (Glen), Kevin (Leanne) and their families. The entire Cove family has referred to Kevin as their own son and brother and they too dearly miss him. Chosen brother to many life-long friends especially Mark Lundie, Bob Boudreau, Mike Patterson and Anthony Mincone.
Kevin leaves behind his soul mate Sharon after eight short but wonderful years together. In his final days, Kevin and Sharon joyfully celebrated their five years of marriage and reaffirmed their commitment to each other in the presence of family and friends.
Although he never had children of his own, he was a wonderful, devoted stepfather and mentor to his stepson Matthew MacLeod whom he dearly loved and would have done anything for.
Kevin was also the “favourite” uncle of many nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention. It is inevitable that the many “Uncle Kevin” stories will be committed to memory so much so that those who have never met him will feel like they know him simply because of these stories.
An accomplished athlete from a very young age, Kevin’s long history and commitment to athleticism extended beyond sports to all aspects of his life and career. He emulated teamwork and leadership in every way possible and was highly influential in all areas of his life, as evidenced by the tremendous outpouring of support when word got out about his fight against cancer. Kevin long held the belief that true integrity was reflected by consistency of character regardless of who was in the room; he deeply understood the power of relationships and this was reflected in all his relationships throughout his entire life whether he met someone once or knew them for a lifetime. Kevin has truly left his mark with everyone whom he crossed paths with. All will remember how he made them feel during each of those encounters….not to mention how he made them laugh.
Kevin’s wife Sharon and family would like to thank everyone who supported Kevin during his final journey, with honorable mention to Mark Lundie (Joanne) and Bob Boudreau (Michele) who were at his side in the way that only best friends can be and who made personal sacrifices to make that happen. Kevin’s wish to remain at home was made possible by the loving devotion of so many who loved him, especially his stepson Matthew MacLeod and Danny and Beverley Reid. Appreciation is also extended to the many family members, friends and work acquaintances who reached out during Kevin and Sharon’s time of need…too numerous to mention but you know who you are. Special thanks are also extended to Kevin’s cancer care and palliative team especially Dr. Spadafora, Sarah Bernier, Dr. Buehner, Dr. Bowen, Dr. Apostle and Dr. Edwards. Appreciation is also expressed to Kari-Lyn, Holly and Marcy who worked closely with Kevin’s family to ensure his home care needs were met with compassion and positivity.
As per Kevin’s request, no funeral service will be held. Instead, a celebration of life will be held in his honour and will take place on the weekend of their fifth wedding anniversary. Those wishing to attend can go to the Water Tower Inn atrium on Saturday August 10th between 1 pm and 4 pm.
Kevin spent his entire life being of service to others. He always fought for the underdog with a deep sense of compassion, and steadfastly believed in the power of community when the focus could be on what could be done together that could not be done alone. For that reason, donations to John Howard Society of Sault Ste. Marie or to Women In Crisis (Algoma) Inc. would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers. If you prefer and in the spirit of Kevin’s faith in humanity, pay it forward instead to someone in need in a way that makes the most sense to them.
