POWER, James Joseph “Joe”

Born March 28, 1924 near Douglas, Ontario to the late William and Melinda (Parks) Power. Died February 4, 2012 at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.  Loyal husband for almost 55 years of Neomi (Conway).  Kind and gentle father to Nora (Cameron Purdon) of Guelph, Bridget of Sault Ste. Marie, Ruth (Stewart Hayes) of London, Cecelia (Hideki Sumi) of Toronto and Barry (Barbara Farrell) of Ottawa.  Proud grandfather of 11: Hugh, Kathleen, Alison and Rory Purdon; Moira, Brenna and Theresa Hayes; Naomi and Jorge Sumi and Aidan Power; sadly predeceased by infant grandson Kieran Power.  Joe is survived by siblings: John (Theresa), Aileen, Dan, Theresa (Frank Brewer) and Irene (Anthony Lajoie). Predeceased by siblings Mike (Irene), Alec (Clare (d), Yvonne), Mary (John McMahon (d)), Sylvester (Catherine (d), Marguerite), Beatrice (Micky Culhane) and infant sister Clare. Beloved brother-in-law of Omer, Philip, Bernadette, and Cecelia Conway of Barry’s Bay, Ontario. Joe will be missed by many nieces and nephews as well as neighbours and friends.  Joe was a long time employee of Algoma Steel and member of St. Jerome’s Parish who raised his family by his example of unshakable work ethic, love of learning, friendliness and wry sense of humour.  The family would like to thank Dr. Anne Lee as well as the staff of Great Northern Retirement Residence and the Sault Area Hospital for their kind and compassionate care of this wonderful man. In lieu of flowers donations to St. Jerome’s Parish Building Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully received. Private family visitation will take place. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Jerome’s Catholic Church, 26 Carmel Rd, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Reception will take place in the church hall following the Mass. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Douglas, Ontario.
