It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roland Kurt Poser in his 97th year at Sault Area Hospital on Sunday, January 8, 2023.

Loving husband for 70 years of Sonja (Greiling). Beloved father of Wyatt (Kim) and cherished Opa of Ryan (Kristen) and Madison. Predeceased by his parents, Willy and Frieda Poser and brother Gerhard (Lizzy) of Germany. Remembered by his niece and nephews in Germany.

Roland was born in Gera, Germany in 1926 and immigrated to Canada with Sonja in 1950. A Civil Engineer, he worked on projects in Toronto, Guelph, and Medicine Hat before arriving in Sault Ste. Marie for the construction of the Mannesman Tube Mill. They loved the area so decided to stay in Sault Ste. Marie to raise a family and start up a business, Great Lakes Machine and Metal Fabricators.

Roland was an active member of the YMCA for over 50 years where he enjoyed working out and playing recreational and competitive volleyball. He was also a provincial volleyball referee and played well into his 80s. He and Sonja enjoyed travel to Europe to visit family and friends and to Florida just to relax. Roland loved a good meal and a glass of red wine. He also enjoyed taking care of his home and yard. He will be fondly remembered during visits to our cottage on Upper Island Lake where he swam and took saunas with family. Roland loved to correspond with family and friends via email and was active on his computer and cell phone always. He enjoyed watching all sports, especially following the Greyhounds and talking curling with Kim’s mom Joan.

A private family celebration and service was held where we honoured a life well lived and a man well loved and respected by all he met.

Thank you to Collegiate Heights staff for their amazing support and kindness to Roland over the last year. The family would also like to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and support workers at Sault Area Hospital and Group Health Centre who provided excellent care and kindness.

Memorial donations (payable by cheque or online) may be made to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation or the Group Health Centre Foundation.  Arrangements entrusted to the Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East 705-759-2522).  Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the Poser family.
