POPPLETON, Douglas James

Posted

Passed away peacefully at the Sault Ste. Marie Hospital on March 18, 2013 at the age of 60. Douglas was a special and cherished son of Astrid and Bob Poppleton and brother of Bryan (all predeceased). Red-headed Douglas and his red-haired Mom were a prominent twosome in Sault Ste. Marie for many years at the mall, the bank, Tim Hortons, bingo halls and swimming pools. In his younger years Douglas enjoyed the Special Olympics, dancing and holidaying with his Mom and Auntie Signe. Doug was famous for his giggles and bear hugs for everyone he knew. Tho' challenged he never forgot names of people he loved and cared about. The F. J. Davey Home became home to Doug and his Mom ten years ago and he remained there for almost seven more years after her passing. Sincere thanks to the wonderful caregivers of Douglas at Cedar Lane 2nd Floor for the loving hugs they were willing to give and receive from him. We wish to posthumously thank three people who were very special in his life: Gayle Clark for her many, many years of caring, education, attention and love and his cousins Rick and Vivianne Fleming who were always there for Doug and his Mom. A big thank you to Shelli Fielding Levac, her husband Paddy and cousin Lleyn Fleming Burgess for spending precious time with him over many years. Doug was a loving uncle to Lynn (North Bay), Sharon and Sandy Toronto) Poppleton and their children. He will be greatly missed by his loving cousins Sandy and Carman Fielding, Roger and Florence Fleming, Greg Ackerland and Muriel Murphy-Talbot. Predeceased by cousins Bill and Cecile Fleming and his favorite Uncle Arnold Ackerland and Auntie Signe Fleming. Rita Poppleton and Jerry McAndrew made many trips from Haileybury to visit Doug and he was always excited to spend time with them as well. Special thanks to nurses Leanne, Nicole and Becky and Dr. Netawee at SAH ER for their kindness and care his last few days. Doug, your hugs and your "Hey!  What are you doing here?" will certainly be missed by many. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 3 pm at the F.J. Davey Home.  Chaplain Mary Alice Policicchio officiating.  Donations in his memory may be made to the F.J. Davey Home, Community Living Algoma or a charity of your choice.
