George Papageorgiou, born June 6, 1939 passed away peacefully on April 24, 2022 with Harriet, his wife of 64 years by his side.

George grew up in the village of Malona, on the island of Rhodes, Greece. He married Hariklia (Harriet) Zanettos in 1957 and the two left the island a year later, sailing to Canada where they made their home in Sault Ste. Marie. 

George worked at Algoma Steel, retiring in 1990 after 30 years of service. He spent many hours working in his woodshop, and enjoyed sharing his talent with many friends and family who received his handiwork. He also enjoyed puzzles, coffee with friends and was active in the Greek community and church.

Beloved husband and best friend to Harriet, loving dad to Milton (Carol Yanisch), and Maria (Boris) Vahrusev and grandson Nikolas Vahrusev.  Brother to Eva Koukoulas, Manoli Papageorgiou, brother-in-law to Stella (late John) Sassos, Effie (Tony) Antonas, uncle to Maria Sassos, Tsambikoula (Nick) Kiekkas, and Anthe Zanettos, Paul Christofakis, Milton Christofakis, George Zanettos and families.  George will be missed by many cousins, relatives and friends in Canada, Greece and the U.S.

Predeceased by parents Miltiades and Kiriakoula Papageorgiou, parents-in-law George and Maria Zanettos, sister Chrisanthe Louis and brother-in-law Steve Zanettos.

The family would like to thank the caring doctors, nurses and hospital staff for their wonderful care of George in his final days.

A private funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church followed by interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East 705-759-2522).
