OLIPHANT, William Leonard (Len), R.P.F.

Died peacefully at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH), Sault Ste. Marie, on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 in the company of family. Born in Toronto, March 1, 1923, son of the late William and Mae Oliphant. Beloved companion of Muriel (Frost) for 71 years and husband for over 66 years. Loving father of Leslie (Ray LeBouef), Robert (Marco Fiola), Barbara (Oliver Jenkins) and Mary (Bob Tuck). Remembered as a wonderful grandfather and friend by Hilary and Ian, and their father Graeme Connell. Predeceased by his sisters Helen Quirt and Cleo Oake, and his brother Ross Oliphant. Brother-in-law of Stan Frost (Jane) and Joe Richardson. Remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews. Len served in the war as an officer in the RCAF, receiving his wings as a Navigator-Bomb Aimer and continued with a love of flying all his life. After earning his degree in forestry from the University of Toronto, Len and Muriel moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1949, where Len began his career as a Professional Forester with Abitibi. He joined Algoma Central Railway in 1963 where he managed forestry, mining and lands operations for 25 years. A committed community leader, Len worked with a variety of organizations including the Algoma Lung Association, the YMCA, the Chamber of Commerce and served many years as a Governor at Sault College. A life-long athlete, Len is remembered by many friends from badminton, tennis, cross-country skiing, golf and walking, which he shared with Muriel, his children and grandchildren. Friends are welcome to visit Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Arthur Funeral Home. A celebration of Len's life will be held at Central United Church, 160 Spring Street on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 11 am. Donations in Len's memory may be made to ARCH, the Algoma Conservatory of Music, Central United Church or the charity of your choice.
