NEWMAN, Harold

It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Harold Newman at the Sault Area Hospital with his family by his side on September 11, 2023, at the age of 85. He leaves behind to mourn his loss his wife and best friend of 61 years, Madelyn (nee Longarini). He was a devoted and loving father to his children, Suzanne (Anthony) Chiverelli and Diane Newman and was a special Gramps to Joey, Jimmie, JuJu & his furry grand pup Olivia.

Son of the late Dalton (John) and Enid (nee Lane) Newman and son-in-law of the late Gus and Mary (nee Ruicci) Longarini. Brother to the late Patricia Mayer (Sylva), Dave (Jackie) Newman (late Verena), late Tommy Newman (Petra), late Kathleen Gagnon (late Louis) and Robert Newman (Helen). Brother-in-law to John Longarini (late Thelma) and the late Nancy Skinner (late Jim). Harold was also uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Harold was a kind and selfless man of many talents and skills and his ingenuity knew no bounds (often having been referred to as MacGyver). He was always ready to lend a helping hand and shied away from accolades. He preferred to be in the background working and solving problems rather than in the spotlight.

He loved camping, fishing, hunting and in later years long walks in nature amongst the wildlife just appreciating the beauty around him. He especially enjoyed his daily 3 mile walk around the block meeting and greeting all those he encountered as well as their furry companions. However, what Harold loved most was time with his family, whether simply sharing a meal, reminiscing about days gone by or an occasional outing to Gros Cap for a picnic as we would sit and watch the sunlight reflecting on the water. He was a man of quiet strength and a true gentleman. He was our rock and our hero. To say goodbye to such a man would be impossible so we will say, "until we meet again."

We would like to send a special thank you to the staff at 3C of the Sault Area Hospital for their care and compassion especially Dr. Mandur, Dr Jarrett, Dr Bishop, and Harold's very own angels MacKenna and Julia who provided such wonderful end of life care and are a true credit to their profession. You have our heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

We would also like to thank all of the staff at Van Dale on Harold's and our behalf who have taken such remarkable care of Diane for so many years. You showed us that you don't have to be related to be family and there was nothing more important to him than family. We've been blessed many times over.

As per Harold's wishes there was no service and cremation has taken place.

Given his love of animals and especially dogs donations made to the SSM Humane Society would be appreciated (payable online https://ssmhumanesociety.ca/ or by cheque).
