Passed away peacefully at the Sault Area Hospital with his family by his side on Monday, November 21, 2022 at the age of 87.

Loving husband to Valentine "Vi" Murphy for 54 years. Dear father of James "Jim" Andrew (Kelly) and Catherine "Cathy" Ann Murphy (Geoff George). Cherished poppa and peapod to Ryan, Meredith, Emerson, Allison and Genevieve. Predeceased by his father John Andrew Murphy and mother Frances Murphy (nee Crebo). Brother to John Franklin (Nancy) of Victoria BC, who was a constant support through his illness. Jim is predeceased by his sisters Edna Proulx, Ruth Williamson and Geri Murphy. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews.

Jim was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. He graduated from Lake Superior State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In 1958, he started working at Algoma Steel in the Industrial Engineering Department as Senior Operations Analyst and Supervisor in Operations Technology. Jim retired from Algoma Steel on July 1st, 1991 and enjoyed many years of boating, travelling and Florida vacations with his family.

Jim was a proud member of the 2310 Army Cadets from 1947 to 1952, earning the rank of Cadet Captain. He continued serving Canada, joining the 49th Medium Anti-Aircraft regiment in 1952. From 1954 to 1957, he served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons, an armoured regiment in Western Canada. Returning to Sault Ste. Marie, he joined what would become the 49th Field Regiment, earning the rank of Major and becoming Deputy Commanding Officer. He retired from Military Service in 1991. He was a board member of the 49th Field Regiment/Sault Ste. Marie Historical Society Museum, and Treasurer of the Regimental Senate Trust Fund, providing support to Cadet Units.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East 705-759-2522) on Monday, November 28, 2022 from 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm. Service to follow in the chapel at 3 pm. Memorial contributions to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Sault Area Hospital who provided care and compassion in his time of need.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion are requested to assemble at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 3 pm for a memorial service for the late James Murphy.
