Posted

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 in his 86th year, surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his beloved wife Jean (nee McLaughlin) of 44 years. Cherished father of Julia Kelly (Paul), Kathy Mitchell, Patti Merelaid (Vello), Mary White (Blaine) and Sandy Mitchell (Carla). “Grandpa” as his children and grand children fondly called him, will be remembered by his grandchildren: Shaun & Blair Kelly, Jesse Merelaid, Sarah, Rebecca & Alexis White, Ryan, Matthew & Jenna Mitchell. Brother to Helen Yeo of Guelph. Predeceased by Jim and Hugh Mitchell.
Grant graduated from University of Guelph as an AGGIE with a degree in Agriculture; he continued his education by working on a Master’s Degree while working in the Sault. He began his career as an Agriculture Representative in Vineland before moving to the Sault to be the Agricultural Representative for Algoma. When he retired in 1983 he completed 36 years of service with the Ontario Government. Grant’s love of farming was reflected in his active involvement in activities like the 4H Club, judging livestock for fairs or plowing competitions, or visiting farms within the Algoma region. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Rotary Club for over 30 years, receiving Rotarian of the Year in 1977. Grant was an avid sports fan, following hockey, baseball and football through every season. Grant was his children and grandchildren’s number one fan attending all sports activities. Grandpa was always willing to read storybooks, watch plays or musical productions, play along to any Sailor Moon game or even step into goal for a grandchild to practice shots. Grant loved taking part in euchre games and was famous for his lone hands. Grant will be lovingly remembered for his quiet demeanor, steadfast support and involvement in all of our lives.
