With great sorrow, the family of Richard (Dick) Metcalfe announce his passing Sunday, May 9, 2021 surrounded by his family.
Born December 25th, 1931 in Walford ON to Andrew and Pearl (nee McFadden) Metcalfe. Devoted and loving husband to Margaret (nee Coyne) for 51 years, father to Richard, Chris, and Andrew (Darrell Czop), amazing grandfather to Ellie, Jack, Jae, Taylor, and Violet. Brother to late Alice (late Ferman) Hanes, the late Annie (late Rudolph) Page, and the late Dorothy Williams. Brother in-law to the late Ken (late Pauline) Coyne and Elizabeth (Jim) Cameron. He will be remembered fondly by his many nieces and nephews.
He accomplished anything that he set his mind to do, if you said he couldn’t, he would just to prove you wrong. Over a span of 50 years, he was heavily involved in coaching hockey and served as a long-time Soo Pee Wee Arena board member. You were not able to go out of the house without running into either a former hockey or ball teammate or someone that he had coached either in hockey or baseball. We cannot count the times we heard are you related to Dick Metcalfe, which was then followed by how highly he was thought of. He volunteered many hours at the Pee Wee Arena, painting lines, Fall Fair, and various fundraising activities. He felt that all kids should have the opportunity to participate in sports and volunteered timeless hours coaching young players. His sons were fortunate to have him as coach through the years in both hockey and baseball.
He lived an amazing life of many adventures, from working shoveling coal on ACR, to being a sailor on the Tugboat that hauled pulp from as far as Thunder Bay to the Sault. He attended Barber school in Winnipeg in 1961 where he met and developed a long-time friendship with the late Reno Pettenuzzo whom he barbered with upon returning to the Sault. He retired from the ADSB as a custodian after 24 years.
He taught us the value of hard work, sacrifice, family, and to remember those who are not as fortunate. There is no one that can pick a basket of blueberries as fast as he could or picked as clean, we know that he will be excited to once again go picking with Annie.
A Private Family Graveside Service will be held in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial donations made payable by cheque or online to ARCH or the Soo PeeWee Arena would be appreciated by the family.
