MELCHIORRE, Nino

MELCHIORRE1

It is with heavy hearts, but with wonderful memories, that we announce the unexpected passing of Nino Melchiorre at the Georgian Bay General Hospital in Midland, on Saturday November 21st, 2020 after a brief illness that concluded a full and rewarding life of 82 years (yes, he was actually 82 years old, despite never admitting his true age from the time he turned 39 onwards). In 2014 Nino lost his beloved wife of almost 50 years, Gilda (nee Cundari). He was the proud father to Mario and his wife Dawn-Marie and the late Liza. Loving Nono and devoted cheerleader to adored granddaughters Mia and Ava. Predeceased by dearly loved parents Lorenzo and Palmerina, brother Giovanni Melchiorre and sisters Armida Melchiorre and Antonina Salvatore (late Luigi). Nino will be fondly remembered by brother Mario Melchiorre (Luisa) of Italy and sisters-in-law Lucia Melchiorre, Barb Cundari and Denise Cundari and brothers-in-law, Lui Cundari, Rocco Cundari and Joe Cundari as well as many nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends.

Living with Dementia made his later years difficult; however, Nino never lost his sense of humour, pleasant disposition or endearing personality, often explaining a lapse in memory by saying, “an 80 year old car doesn’t work like a new car!” Strangers soon became friends, as he was quick to strike up a conversation and share a hilarious story of various situations in which he had often found himself. Over the years, his Italian charm won over many people including the amazing staff at the Villa Retirement Home where he resided in his later years. The staff, especially his “Bellas”, Sherrie, Bea, Karen, Bev, Amber, Shannon and Deanna are to be thanked for their superlative care of Nino as they often went above and beyond to make sure he was content. Thank you to Dr. Rafikov and the Georgian Bay General Hospital nursing staff of 2 North for their wonderful care of Nino during his final days.

An avid outdoorsman, Nino was his happiest spending a beautiful day cycling, skiing, gardening, completing home improvements or spending the day hunting with his friends and his dogs. These outings often provided for the many stories that could easily be the basis for a situation comedy…who could ever forget the story of Nino encountering the bear!

As per Nino’s wishes cremation has taken place. In consideration of the continuing health and safety of our friends and family, and in keeping with Co-Vid 19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life will take place at a time when larger gatherings are permitted.
