John passed away suddenly on January 30th, 2024, just after celebrating his 76th birthday.

He is survived by his loving best friend and partner Celia Graham, his children Shannon Camlin (Doug) and Travis McNicol (Joanne) and with pride his grandchildren Quinn, Quaid, Gage and Gavin. Beloved family to Jordana (Marc), Danika (Justin) and adored Oompa to Lenna and Keira.  He was the big brother (but not the boss) of Rick McNicol (Annette), Faye Watchorn (Woody Mathews) and B.J. McNicol (Vicky).

In his retirement years, John and his siblings and partners (Global Wanderers) would get together in different parts of the world to explore, tease each other, savour the easy, loving companionship and laugh. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephew Sara (Nick), Kari, Katelyn and Adam (Genna).  John was also a cherished family member to Pam Graham (Derek), Neil Rimmer, Andrea Graham, Kaelan Graham-Hughes and Sylvia Graham.

John was able to live his life fully and gratefully, truly delighting in the small things, morning coffee on the deck at camp, a hike with dear friends, an Agawa sunset, the sign of moose or deer with hunting buddies, a new bird at the feeder, a good rally on the pickle ball court and very occasionally, a decent play of the hand at bridge. His career as a wildlife biologist was meaningful and influential, and always a part of him. Along his journey, John developed warm friendships that enriched him, brought him joy and made him laugh.

A Celebration of Life will be held at O’Sullivan Funeral Home (215 St. James St., Sault Ste. Marie, ON) on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 2pm until 4pm, with speeches and a time of sharing at 3pm. There will also be a family memoriam at a future McNicol gathering. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent Place, Heart & Stroke or any charity of your choosing.
