Passed away at the Sault Area Hospital on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024.

Harold and family are saddened to announce the passing of Shirley Anne McCarthy (nee Wightman), much loved wife of Harold, loving mother of Sean (Jessica), Shannon, and Erin Robinson (Adam), cherished grandmother of Delia, Dean and Fletcher McCarthy and Jessica, Sydney and Mac Robinson, sister of Glenn Wightman and Janice Burnet (Larry), with nephew Stephen Burnet (Tabitha and daughter Abigail) and niece Rachel Burnet.

Shirley was a kindergarten and primary grade teacher at a variety of schools with the Algoma District School Board for 36 years including going on a teacher exchange for one year in Australia. She very much loved her job and the challenges that it presented.

Harold and Shirley enjoyed many great trips where they made many friends along the way.  They travelled with family and friends throughout Australia, the USA, Europe, China, Africa, the Caribbean, South and Central America as well as both coasts of Canada. In the last few years camping at Batchawana became their special place.

Shirley was an avid quilter, knitter and crafter. She lovingly made quilts for all her children and grandchildren that will be cherished keepsakes.

Her faith was a large part of her life and she was a dedicated volunteer at Willowgrove United Church.  Her work with assorted groups at Willowgrove became her biggest passion with most time dedicated to Mission and Service and Outreach work.

Shirley suffered a massive stroke on Dec. 16, her family gathered around her until her passing on January 2, 2024. Special thanks to SAH Emergency unit, the staff at Health Sciences North Hospital in Sudbury, and SAH 3B staff for the excellent care she received.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Willowgrove United Church (55 Tilley Rd.) on Saturday, January 13th, 2024 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. The funeral service conducted by Rev. Glen Eagle will be at 12:30 pm, followed by lunch in the Fellowship Hall.
