March 7, 1931 – April 5, 2023

We sadly announce the death of our mom, grandma, great grandma, sister, cousin, and aunt. Dorothy passed away peacefully shortly after her 92nd birthday and a very brief battle with cancer. We expect that there was a joyous heavenly reunion with husband, Don Sr. and son, Don Jr. during the early morning of Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

Dody, as she was affectionately called by family, was the eldest child born to Frank and Mildred Buchan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on March 7, 1931. They became a family of four, moving many times for adventure in Michigan before settling in the Sault where their family grew and always included foster children. She was pre-deceased by baby sister, Emma Carolyn, and brother, Harvey Buchan (late Elizabeth). Surviving sisters are Cecilia Hanes, Kitty Buchan, and Connie Peterkin and as well as many nieces and nephews on the Buchan side of the family. She will be dearly missed by her sisters and her cousins, especially Mary Catherine Haley. She is pre-deceased also by sister-in-law, Helen Ann Tynkaluk (late Mike) and survived by their children.

Mom married Donald Thorburn Roderick McBain on May 8, 1954, and they shared a wonderful life together with their three children, highlighted by activities at various camps on Lake Superior, including boating, fishing, and snowmobiling. Mom was first mate as she and Dad enjoyed boating adventures in Ontario waterways. She was a devoted stay-at-home mom until her children were grown. Sadly, Mom was pre-deceased by her son, Donald Buchan McBain, but is survived by devoted daughters Heather Edwards (Steve), Barbara Brunsch (Wayne), and daughter-in-law Sandra McBain (nee Arnill). She was adored by her grandchildren Megan Marcy (Ryan), Erin Corcoran (Darren), Kristin MacLennan (Andrew), Sarah McBain, and Rory McBain (Jill Gabrylewicz). She is lovingly remembered as “Great” by her great grandchildren Benjamin, Cameron, Maclyn, Kaelyn, Maysen, Kira, and Levi. She was devoted to all of them, never missing a birthday or anniversary and always enjoying stories of their accomplishments and boasting of them to friends and family.

Dorothy’s career as a florist began later in life and put her excellent knowledge of plants and flowers to good use. She was a fiercely independent, tell-it-like-it-is woman, a master knitter and seamstress, and amazing baker of pies and cinnamon buns. We have her handiwork and recipes that will be forever treasured.  A devoted University of Michigan Wolverine football fan and diehard Toronto Maple Leaf hockey fan, she rarely missed a game. Sporting events of every kind were her entertainment favourites.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank Dr. Katharine Dawson and Dr. Karen Booth as well as nurses in Emergency Services and Palliative Care for their kindness and care during her brief hospital stay.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East, 705-759-2522) on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. followed by a private family service. Donations can be made to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation (Palliative Care Unit), ARCH, or the Zonta Club of SSM Foundation.

Fond Memories and expressions of sympathy may be made at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the McBain family.
