LUOMARANTA, Mauri Vilhelm (1933 – 2023) - Passed away peacefully at the Mauno Kaihla Koti on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Predeceased by his beautiful wife Liisa (2018). Father of Erkki (Noreen), Anne Irvine (Gord), Lauri (Rita) and Leena deSereville (Paul). Grandfather of Shannon Luomaranta, Nicole Andrade (Jason), Stephanie Irvine (Jason), Vesa Luomaranta (Sara), Luukas Luomaranta, Chantal deSereville (Nick) and Tia Degagne (Adam). Great Grandfather of Taylor and Aiden Andrade, Brody and Ronin Irvine, Miia and Aili Luomaranta, Connor, Leevi and Niilo Luomaranta and soon to arrive Baby Degagne. Predeceased by his three brothers and survived by his only sister and five brothers in Finland.
Dad arrived in Canada in March 1958, followed by his wife and young son three months later. A machinist by trade, from which he took a break in the 1970's to make cross-country skis and open a retail store selling cross country skis and accessories. Dad was an active member of the Suomi Kerho, Soo Finnish Ski Club and enjoyed many years with the Kaleva Men's Choir. An avid outdoors enthusiast, he enjoyed spending time at the family camp, fishing, hunting moose, deer and turkeys. In later years, he and mom enjoyed traveling throughout North America.
A private family service has been held. Contributions in Mauri's memory to the Ontario Finnish Resthome Association (OFRA) are appreciated. The family would like to thank and recognize the amazing care the PSW's and nurses at Mauno Kaihla Koti gave dad.
