The Sun Queen of Promenade Drive is gone.
Marguerite Elizabeth “Peggy” born August 4, 1927, in Asquith, Saskatchewan lived her childhood and teen years in Stayner, Ontario before moving to Desbarats, Ontario, where she met and married Clayton Linklater. Marguerite and Clayton made a home with their four children in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Marguerite passed away peacefully with her family by her side at A.R.C.H. on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at the age of 92.
She was a person of numerous talents as a skilled hairdresser with entrepreneurial ability to open her own salon, a pharmacy assistant, a social worker, and an educator. Not one to stop learning, Marguerite attended Algoma University graduating at the age of 58 with a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours). Choosing a later in life career in social work with the Grey Sisters of the General Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie.
During the years when Marguerite was in good health, she was active in the pool at the Sault Ste. Marie Family YMCA, enjoying her post-work-out socializing with the ladies over a cup of coffee as much as the exercising.
Marguerite was a determined and often candid lady who shared her own thought-provoking opinions with her children Cheryl, Susan, Sandra, Charles, Daughter-in-law Annalise and Son-in-law Jim Halverson. Her no-nonsense attitude is what kept everyone on their toes.
She always enjoyed keeping up to date about the lives of her grandchildren Richard Sharp (Melanie), Brandy Sharp Young (Brad), Rob Syrette, Nygel Linklater, Adrian Linklater and Lauren Linklater and her great-grandchildren Justin and Ryan Sharp, and Olivia, Taber and Nevan Young. Remembering all the details about their adventures and being sure to check-in often on how they made out.
When Marguerite chose to relax, she could be found reading a book or the Sault Star basking in her backyard sun in everyone’s favourite blue bikini (yes, even at 92). The relaxing of course only came after she finished a productive day – harvesting from her vegetable garden or canning for the winter months, she was always excited to find a new recipe while reading her plethora of cookbooks. She made it known to all the importance of healthy eating.
Marguerite has now joined her beloved Clayton for a long sought after cup of coffee and conversation.
Mum, your unwavering devotion to your family, has taught all of us the importance of working together to address the challenges that come with living life.
Our family would like to thank our exceptional neighbours, the staff of Sault Area Hospital’s Emergency Department and the 3C Medical Unit, the staff and nurses of Home & Community Care North East LHIN, the Bayshore Home Health Nursing Team and the Support Team from Independent Order of Oddfellows. During the recent power outage additional assistance from the staff of Medigas, the PUC, and Quattro Hotel.
Lastly, we cannot begin to express our gratitude for the incredible team from ARCH who supported our family through the last moments of Marguerite’s journey. Your compassion and understanding was indeed a gift to our family.
At Marguerite’s request, a private family service for our dearest Mum, Gram, Nana, and Great-Nana will be officiated by The Very Rev. Jim McShane, St. Luke’s Cathedral. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when the days are warm, the sun shines brightly and water refreshes.
In lieu of flowers, donations to A.R.C.H., War Amps Of Canada, or the Sault Area Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
